Skylight Alternatives

Skylight Alternatives: When a Solar Light May Be the Better Choice

Traditional skylights remain one of the best ways to bring natural daylight into a home. Whether through a Fixed Roof Window or Opening Roof Window, they provide genuine natural light and can dramatically transform a space.

However, not every home is suited to a traditional skylight.

Multi-level construction, limited roof access, long light shafts or installation costs can sometimes make a skylight impractical. In these situations, a Solar Light may be the better solution.

Rather than transferring natural daylight through a roof opening, a Solar Light uses a roof-mounted solar panel to power a large LED ceiling light that mimics the appearance of a skylight.

In many homes, the best solution is not one or the other, but a combination of both. Homeowners often choose Opening Roof Windows  or Fixed Roof Windows in living areas where natural daylight is most valued, while using Solar Lights in hallways, ensuites, walk-in robes and other locations where a traditional skylight is difficult to install.

Traditional Skylight vs Solar Light

While both products are designed to brighten dark areas of the home, they work in very different ways.

A traditional skylight captures and transfers natural daylight into the room below.

A Solar Light uses solar energy to power an LED ceiling light, creating the appearance of a skylight without requiring a large roof opening or light shaft.

The right choice depends on your home's construction, roof layout and how the space will be used.

What Is a Solar Light?

A Solar Light is a skylight alternative designed for situations where a traditional skylight may be difficult, impractical or uneconomical to install.

The system uses a roof-mounted solar panel to power a large LED ceiling light panel. Unlike a traditional skylight, it does not provide natural daylight. Instead, it provides daylight-style electric lighting powered by solar energy.

To create a more natural effect, the system automatically adjusts brightness throughout the day, gradually increasing in the morning and fading towards sunset.

The large LED panel produces a daylight-white colour temperature of approximately 5500K, creating a softer and more even light than a conventional downlight. A built-in 240V driver also allows the light to be switched on after dark when additional lighting is required.

Where Do Solar Lights Work Best?

Solar Lights are particularly effective in:

  • Multi-level homes

  • Apartments

  • Strata-titled properties

  • Rental properties

  • Hallways

  • Ensuites

  • Walk-in robes

  • Pantries

  • Internal rooms without direct roof access

They are often chosen where a traditional skylight would require a long light shaft, landlord or strata approval, major building work, or difficult roof access.

Because no light shaft is required, installation is typically faster, simpler and less disruptive.

Why Choose a Solar Light?

Solar Lights offer several practical advantages where a traditional skylight may not be feasible:

  • No large roof opening required

  • No ceiling light shaft required

  • Suitable for multi-level homes and apartments

  • Minimal roof penetration

  • No direct solar heat transfer into the room below

  • Easy DIY-friendly installation

  • Can operate during the day and after dark

  • Ideal for hallways, ensuites, laundries and internal rooms

For many homeowners, they provide a simple way to brighten areas that would otherwise be difficult or expensive to illuminate with a traditional skylight.

When Is a Traditional Skylight the Better Choice?

If your goal is genuine natural daylight, a traditional skylight
remains the preferred solution.

Living rooms, kitchens, dining
areas and open-plan spaces often benefit most from traditional skylights because they bring real sunlight into the home and create a stronger connection with the outdoors.

Where roof access and ceiling construction allow, traditional skylights generally deliver the highest daylight performance and the most natural lighting experience.

Which Solution Is Right for Your Home?

There is no single answer.

Traditional skylights are generally the best option when natural daylight is the priority. Solar Lights are often the better choice when building design, ceiling construction or installation constraints make a traditional skylight impractical.

In many homes, the best solution is a combination of both. For example, a homeowner may choose Opening Roof Windows or Fixed Roof Windows in living areas where natural daylight is most valued, while using Solar Lights in hallways, ensuites, walk-in robes or other locations where a traditional skylight is difficult to install.
