Glazing Options for Skylights

The glazing used in a skylight influences the quality of light entering your home, as well as comfort, safety, energy efficiency and noise reduction. Different glazing solutions are suited to different applications, from traditional skylight kits through to premium roof windows and bespoke architectural projects.

Low-E Glass

Low-E (Low Emissivity) glass incorporates a microscopic coating that helps reduce heat transfer while still allowing natural daylight to enter the home. It can reduce glare, improve thermal comfort and help minimise unwanted solar heat gain during summer.

Laminated Safety Glass

Laminated glass consists of two panes of glass bonded together with a clear interlayer. If damaged, the glass remains held together rather than falling, making it ideal for overhead glazing applications. Laminated glass also blocks up to 99% of harmful UV radiation and can provide improved acoustic performance.

Argon-Filled Double Glazing

Premium roof windows commonly utilise a sealed argon-filled cavity between two panes of glass. Argon gas improves insulation performance and can help reduce outside noise compared with conventional air-filled glazing units.

Roof Window Glazing

Unlike traditional windows, roof windows receive direct sunlight throughout the day. For this reason, premium Low-E laminated safety glazing is used to improve comfort, reduce UV exposure and minimise glare.

5mm Toughened Outer Glass Low-E / 9mm Argon-Filled Cavity / 6.76mm Laminated Inner Safety Glass

Skylight Kits and Diffusers

Traditional skylight kits utilise a light shaft and diffuser to distribute daylight evenly throughout the room. Because the diffuser softens and spreads the light before it enters the living space, these products can effectively utilise either an acrylic dome or a 6mm toughened glass roof glazing panel.

This provides a practical and cost-effective solution for hallways, bathrooms, laundries, walk-in robes and other areas where natural daylight is desired.

Bespoke and Architectural Projects

For bespoke projects, larger roof windows and custom skylights, we can specify higher-performance glazing solutions to suit the project requirements. Depending on the application, this may include thicker glass, additional Low-E coatings, tinted glazing, obscure or frosted glass, acoustic glazing, or other specialised glass configurations.

Glazing selection is determined by a combination of factors including size, location, wind loading, safety requirements, thermal performance, solar control and acoustic performance. For larger skylights and commercial applications, engineering assessment may be required to ensure the glazing system is fit for purpose and complies with the applicable Australian Standards.
